Signatures for Sustainability: November
BP Decatur Plant
BP’s Decatur Plant is surrounded by approximately 1,000 acres of wetlands, agricultural fields and timberland located on the south bank of the Tennessee River in northern Alabama.

Students from the Wetlands Edge Environmental Center perform research in the marshlands at BP's Decatur Plant. |
The site has an outstanding wildlife habitat enhancement program that consists of several projects. One of the major projects is the regular maintenance of the 1.5-mile hiking trail that meanders through the property. In addition to the walking trail, other projects include bird nesting programs for wood duck, tree swallow, American kestrel, purple martin, eastern bluebird, great horned and barn owl, tree planting programs, identification and relocation of killdeer nesting areas within active portions of the site, and quail management.
The Decatur Plant continues to work with many organizations in the area in an effort to enhance wildlife habitat at the site, including the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge. Members of the Decatur site also participate in environmental education and outreach programs developed by the Wetlands Edge Environmental Center (WEEC).
The Corporate Lands for Learning program at WEEC includes frequent training opportunities for area teachers and an extensive list of educational offerings for area students. Programs are based on Alabama Education Standards and include components on plant growth and development, coastal ecology, animal studies, and the study of butterflies and other insects. WEEC provides programs year around, to allow constant opportunities for hands-on education to hundreds of local students.
Please check back for more information on the site's Signature event as it becomes available.
